How to Polish Concrete

If you’re a homeowner, you know your home needs maintenance. You may set aside some time every year to take care of things around your home, including your concrete floors. Polishing concrete is harder than it may seem, especially if it’s your first time doing it. Even concrete needs some maintenance. Let’s look at how you can polish concrete at home.

Tips on How to Polish Concrete

In order to properly polish concrete, you’ll need a concrete grinder. You can buy one, but it can be expensive. A cheaper alternative is to borrow one from family, friends or a coworker if they have one available. If not, you can often rent one from home improvement stores. Call and see which ones have a concrete grinder available, see what the prices are and go for it if affordable. If you can’t find one in your area, try some concrete companies and see if they rent equipment, you might be surprised that they do.

Along with the concrete grinder, you’ll need a variety of grinder discs which you should be able to rent along with the grinder itself. If not, you’ll need to invest in buying them yourself, which may run the cost of the project higher than you anticipated. At that point, you may want to conduct a concrete professional for a bid for polishing concrete.

In many cases, choosing a concrete contractor over doing it yourself – especially depending on the size of the concrete surface – is cheaper once you add up the cost of renting equipment and the time it takes to actually get it done. If you’re not sure you still want to take on the project, contact a concrete specialist and get an estimate.

If you’re a do-it-yourself, you can polish concrete yourself so long as you know what you’re getting into.
